Tips for Healthy, Happy Feet during Summer Adventures

Get your feet summer-ready for all your adventures. Your feet carry you everywhere, from morning walks to summer adventures, and overall health depends on keeping them healthy. Whether in sandals, barefoot on the beach, or on outdoor adventures, foot care is essential — especially for those with diabetes, nerve damage, or circulation issues like blood clots or peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Here is how to keep your feet healthy in the warmer months:

• Wear proper-fitting shoes:
Opt for sandals with a stiff sole; flip-flops are fine for short periods but offer little support. Make sure closed-toe shoes fit properly to avoid blisters, ingrown nails, or corns. Choose breathable materials, protect your feet from hot surfaces, and pick activity-specific shoes, like hiking boots or water shoes.

• Inspect your feet every day: medicine for motion sickness, cough, cold and diarrhea remedies
After summer activities, inspect your feet for cuts, blisters, swelling, redness, or changes in skin color.

• Wash and dry your feet:
Wash daily, especially after swimming or sweating. Dry between toes to prevent fungal infections and change socks regularly when wearing closed shoes.

• Care for skin and nails:
Trim toenails straight across, avoid cutting too short, and moisturize your feet (not between toes). Heat and pool chlorine can dry skin, so regular care is essential.

• Seek medical advice if you have:
- Diabetes, circulation issues, or nerve damage
- Foot pain that persists for several days
- Signs of infection (redness, warmth, swelling)
- Wounds that do not heal
- Toenails that are thick, discolored, or ingrown
